We need a different origin story than Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. What should it be?

What kind of a question is this?

It implies something is wrong with the creation story in the Old Testament. What is wrong with this story?

Can we come up with a story more in tune, and with the same deep resonance, for modern times and modern knowledges?

What are these modern knowledges? One is multi-cultural awareness, the awareness of many religions, and the realities of evolution.

Particularly difficult is the notion of a creator god, creating not only the heavens and the earth, but also the humans, with special interest in, and rules for, them. Perhaps this might be considered as a necessary lie, necessary for social stability, but that is a pragmatic and not a philosophical justification.

Working notes and thinking points:

  • Don't need to go from image to meaning, but other way.
  • We must speak as though simple story we can all understand. Why?
  • Is there any reason to honor the traditional stories. We have made much out of the Abrahamic religious stories, and the Hindu. iS there any reason to think primitive people have a better world-view or a better sense of realities than we do? Apart from the fact that we know we are so confused.
  • Do we need a creation story? Strictly speaking no. No more than we need a god, a purpose, a meaning. But it seems to satisfy us.
  • It should be pretty and engaging.
  • What is a creation story without a creator?
  • A possible outline:
    • The awakening
    • The first worlds they awakened and could have awakened to.
    • The social world. The group. The order, rules, consequences, group behaviors. The other.
    • Status and first celebrities.
    • LATER LAWGIVERS (today)
    • First virtuality.
    • A model world order.
    • The animals. Only had to be concerned with humans, and not with animals. But no.
  • Rulers had to come before gods.
  • Can we live without a first and common anacestor?

Best answer:

In the beginning there was no beginning. There never was. The people eventually wanted a beginning, and indeed made several ones. It made them happy in their minds.

Long ago, here and there, and then there people were awakening. It took generations.

The people could never find the right words for talking about the time before verbal awareness, the time before language, so they used the best words and images they could find. (They are still missing some.)

The first people were Linda and Magne. Of course the first people were not the first people. Nor were they called Linda and Magne. But that barely matters, so that is what we will call them.

Here and there people were awakening, Someone asked: Did someone wake us? Do we awaken to someone? (No answers were heard.)

At the beginnings there were some sounds you could call words, but it had barely emerged from its native behavioral surroundings. In the beginning was the God, and the God was with a word, and God was a word.

Linda and Magne met in a town of many people. Other people lived in longhouses, in family groups, in caves and all sorts of shelters. Linda and Magne did not know this. There were many things Linda and Magne did not know. Most people went mostly predictably about their business.

Storms came, wild animals came, wild people came.

The world may have had a form, but the earth was unperceived and undescribed by any human language. But it was amazing and beautiful.

In the beginning was the day, and the day was light. What do we see in the light?

Linda and Magne watched all this with some interest. Linda and Magne were not gorgeous. But they were young, and strong, and subject to the behaviors of their many ancestors.

And they could ask questions. Where is the grain. Where is our son. What should we do today?
And also questions like: What do we want to do? How should we behave? Why are we doing this? And they looked for answers.

But there were no answers..
So Linda and Magne wrote down some answers. It was like a strong, powerful, angry, and dangerous person told us what to do? (Later other strong, powerful, angry, and dangerous persons changed these around a little bit.)
